Advisors
Following the declaration of a mathematics major you will be assigned to a Department of Mathematics advising team, consisting of our staff advisor Kelsey Tate (klt116@pitt.edu) plus a mathematics faculty mentor. Contact info for both can be found in your PeopleSoft Student Service Center in your my.pitt.edu account: if using HighPoint, click on the "Academics" menu heading, then on "Advisor Information", to find it.
You must meet with your advisor each term to have your academic advising hold lifted prior to registering for the subsequent term. It is your responsibility to schedule your advising appointment, by email or through Pathways. You should think about this well in advance of your registration appointment (see below). You cannot enroll in classes until your advisor reviews and approves your academic plan for the term.
It is also recommended to meet with your faculty mentor each term, prior to your advising appointment. Your faculty mentor is here to guide you through the discipline: they offer deep insight into math course selection, guidance on research and on career and graduate school preparation, and they can connect you to resources in the mathematical community.
Registration
You will self-register for classes online through your PeopleSoft Student Service Center in your my.pitt.edu account. Your assigned "registration appointment" date and time will be listed in your Student Service Center: if using HighPoint, click on the "Enrollment" menu heading, then on "Enrollment Dates", to find it. The system will not allow you to register before your assigned date and time.
It is your responsibility to review your online degree advisement report and choose courses to satisfy both your math major requirements and Arts & Sciences general education requirements. Your faculty mentor can help you choose math courses that best fit your interests and goals, and your advisor can help with these and with general education courses. General education requirements are described here. Courses satisfying individual requirements can be found by applying the appropriate filters to a PeopleSoft class search, or by consulting the General Education Course Catalog.
