Math Club News

This semester, the undergraduate Math Club overcame many challenges that came with the transition back to life in person. Even though Covid-19 put a hold on pizza at meetings, it did not stop the Math Club from holding fun events throughout the semester! Two memorable talks from this semester included Dr. Bard Ermentrout’s famous “Monster Math” talk and a talk by Dr. Wheeler (pictured above) titled “Being a Nerd Is Cool and Why I Take Series Seriously.” In addition to the traditional Math Club talks, the club has also experimented with several new, fun events. Math Jeopardy and the Mental Math Competition were both competitions in which contestants were able to demonstrate their math abilities both individually and in teams. As several Math Club members are taking the Putnam Exam this December, several Math Club meetings were held as “problem solving sessions” to help prepare students for the exam. These new events were a welcome addition to Math Club activities, and the Math Club plans to continue these with an Integration Bee that will be held next spring!
