Abstract or Additional Information

This talk is intended to introduce some of the main ideas of today's number theory and arithmetic geometry by describing the Weil conjectures. This links together the topics of zeta functions, counting solutions in finite fields to polynomial equations, and the adaptation to this setting of cohomology theories from algebraic topology.
