Webwork Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Q: Do I need to buy an access code for Webwork?
    A: No.

  2. Q: How do I find my Pitt Webwork course?
A: Go to webwork.math.pitt.edu and click on the link to your course. In most cases, the name for your course will have the form "Mathxxxx-yyyyy" where "xxxx" is the catalog number for the course and "yyyyyy" is the five digit class number for your course. You can find the class number in your enrollment information in the Peoplesoft student center or from your instructor.

  3. Q: What username and password should I use to login?
A: Use your usual Pitt username and password. Your username must be in lower case.

  4. Q: I tried logging in with my Pitt username and password, but Webwork said "Invalid user ID or password." What am I doing wrong?
A: The most common cause of login failure is entering the username in upper case. It must be entered in lower case. Another possibility is that you are trying to log in to the wrong course. You could also be entering the wrong password. (Be sure the cap lock key is not engaged!) If you checked all of these things, it is possible you are not properly enrolled in the Webwork course. Ask your instructor to verify that you are on her Webwork course roster.

  5. Q: Everyplace where I expect to see a math formula I just see [math]. What's up with that?
A: You are probably using Microsoft Internet Explorer. We have not seen this problem with any other browser. The recommended solution is to switch to another browser for use with Webwork. If you must use MSIE, reloading the offending page usually displays the missing formulas. Another workaround is to change your math display engine from MathJax to jsMath, using the Display Options menu on the bottom left of your Webwork screen. This usually works, but the math display is not as pretty as it is with MathJax.

  6. Q: Do I have to finish a problem set in a single session?
A: No. You can return to a problem set as many times as you wish and continue to submit answers up until the due date.

  7. Q: Can I return to a problem set after the due date?
A: Yes, you can return after the due date, enter answers, and check whether they are correct using the Check Answer button. However, entering a correct (or incorrect) answer after the due date will not change your score on the problem set.

  8. Q: What is the purpose of the "Preview answers" button?
A: It will show you what Webwork thinks you entered, using standard mathematical notation. It will detect things like misplaced parentheses and syntax errors, and give you hints on how to fix them. Clicking the preview button does not count against the number of attempts you are allowed on the problem. Note that clicking the Submit button always counts as one attempt, even if the answer is wrong due to a syntax error.

  9. Q: What should I do once I complete a problem set?
A: Nothing. Your score is automatically updated as you submit your answers.

  10. Q: Why can I not see the problems in some problem sets?
A: Each problem set has an opening date set by your instructor. Before the opening date, you cannot see the problems.

  11. Q: I would like to print a problem set so that I can work on it offline. How do I do that?
A: You can download and print a nicely typeset pdf of your problem set. After logging in, click the link to the problem set you want to download. Near the top of the page you will see the link "Download PDF or TeX Hardcopy for Current Set". Depending on your browser settings, this will either display or download your pdf.

  12. Q: Does the Webwork green bar really have its own facebook page?
    A: Yes.
