Abstract:
We will discuss the von Neumann ergodic theorem, which roughly states that,
for a unitary operator on Hilbert space, the arithmetic means of its iterates will converge
to the orthogonal projection onto the subspace consisting of the operator's fixed points.
We will include elements of the proof and a relationship to dynamical systems.
