Maximal functions, Littlewood-Paley theory and Sobolev spaces

I will talk about new characterizations of the Sobolev spaces that involve the Littlewood-Paley theory.
I will also advertise open problems about boundedness of the maximal functions in Sobolev spaces.
The talk is based on my joint papers with Zhuomin Liu and Jan Maly.
