Abstract or Additional Information

Abstract:  The field of inference, construed broadly, is changing quickly.  Machine learning has moved us more towards engineering and away from traditional mathematical statistics.  Recently, it was visionary to see data as a commodity---now, we are seeing the commodification of analysis.  This talk describes some of the structural changes and research themes that are shaping modern data science,  and discusses the changing skill set that top data scientists (i.e., our graduate students) need now.
