Pitt Math Grad Students Tame the Lions at the Finite Element Circus

The leading technical conference on the mathematical theory of the finite element method was held on November 5 and 6 2021. The location rotates, the atmosphere is informal and the discussions are often challenging (explaining why the word “circus” appears in its title). Talks are usually given by senior professors in the area. Challenging this “usually”, five Pitt PhD students gave talks, representing more than 10% of the research presented:

Ms Xihui Xie, On Adaptive Grad-Div Parameter in Penalty Method

Ms Farjana Siddiqua, Numerical analysis of a modified Smagorinsky Model

Ms Kiera Kean,  Conditioning of Super-Muckenhoupt Degenerate Elliptic Boundary Value Problems

Ms Xing Wang, Mathematical and numerical analysis of a fully coupled Stokes-Biot-Transport problem

Mr. Wenlong Pei, Refactorization of the DLN method: application to Navier Stokes equations

Each talk attracted intense interest and discussions among the mathematicians in the audience.

Graduate Student Organization Picnic

On Sunday, October 24, we had our 2021 Fall Picnic at the overlook in Schenley Park. Although the event is normally held in the afternoon, this year we had it in the late morning to avoid some forecasted rain. The main event was a potluck meal, for which many grad students showed off their cooking skills. Those who did not cook still very generously contributed by bringing drinks, bagels, and other items, and in the end we certainly had too much food (which was a good problem!). After eating, people played frisbee and soccer, and there was even an impromptu salsa dancing exhibition. Thanks to everyone that came!
