Conference Theme
The goal of this workshop is to discuss the implementation of environmental fluctuations in ecological and eco-evolutionary models and effects thereof on the adaptation, migration, extinction, and immune response of species. The underlying motif for these discussions is to bridge the gaps between first-principle models and data-driven ecological models.
Presentations will encompass three main directions namely (1) the formulation of ecological models with environmental factors including best-practices to incorporate environmental fluctuations based on eco-evolutionary processes and experimental data; (2) the linkage between ecological models derived from first-principles and data-driven models, including advances in model-fitting methods; and (3) the analysis of ecological models that focus on the effects of environmental changes on a species adaptation, migration, and fitness. Methods to analyze problems in these areas include tools from dynamical systems, nonlinear analysis of partial differential equations, calculus of variations, probability theory, statistics, and numerical analysis. This event provides a platform for direct communication between ecologists and mathematicians, to advance the formulation of ecologically relevant questions and the subsequent discussion of mathematical methods to address these questions.
Broader Impact
The proposed workshop will promote collaborations across disciplines and researchers from mathematics, ecology, natural resource management, and evolutionary dynamics. Participants will include researchers and trainees from a variety of career stages, both from local and nationwide institutions. Invited speakers will be selected to promote equity and diversity across participants. Participation of under-represented minorities are specifically encouraged to apply. We invite all participants, especially graduate and postgraduate students to present their own research in form of posters, including a short presentation in front of workshop attendees before the start of the poster session. Financial support for participation is available, subject to approved funding (see registration link). With the speaker’s consent, slides and recordings from conference talks will be posted on the conference webpage to achieve an even broader dissemination of results and
impact.
