Viazovska’s work on sphere packings

Maryna Viazovska received a Fields medal this year for her solution to the sphere packing problem in 8 dimensions.  This talk will be the first of two talks about her work.  This  talk will explain the statement of her theorem and will describe some of strategies of the proof.
