Abstract or Additional Information

I will present how nonlocal differential equations appear quite naturally in certain fields of geometric analysis, in particular the geometric calculus of variations. I will start from the classical Plateau's problem and minimal surfaces, and end with modern-day questions about regularity and existence of extremal maps under variational functionals which involve topological constraints, such as knot energies.
